Equipment required:
Two working PCs with Ethernet cards preinstalled.
An Ethernet hub or a switch.
Cat 5 cable.
RJ45 crimp on connectors.
1. Build a crossover Ethernet cable from scratch. Make the cable long enough to reach between the two PCs.
2. Use a cable tester to check that the cable is good.
3. Do this step if the
networking protocols are not already installed:
This is done in the networking control panel.
Install the TCP/IP protocol
Install he Client for Microsoft Networking
Install File and Printer Sharing.
4. Create some temporary folders on each PC and put shares on the folders. Password protect the shares.
5. Connect the two computers together using the Ethernet crossover cable that you built.
6. Demonstrate to the instructor the ability to move files from one PC to the other.
7. Remove the Ethernet crossover cable.
8. Build two straight through Ethernet cables.
9. Connect the two computers together using two Ethernet cables and a switch or a hub.
10. Demonstrate to the instructor the ability to move files from one PC to the other.
11. Remove any equipment and any software that you installed. Return the PCs to their original state.
