Equipment required:
A working PC.
A replacement hard drive.
A bootable floppy disk.
1. Verify that the PC is working correctly before working on it.
2. Open the PC case.
3. Connect the replacement hard drive to one of the IDE cables. Remember to set the master/slave jumpers if needed.
4. Use FDISK to place the replacement hard drive in a pristine state. Remove any existing partitions on the replacement hard drive (if any). Then add a FAT32 primary partition to the replacement drive. BE SURE YOU ARE USING FDISK ON THE REPLACEMENT DRIVE. Incorrect usage could destroy the data on the original hard drive.
5. Format the replacement hard drive.
6. Use the XXCOPY (www.xxcopy.com) utility or the Norton Ghost utility to copy the entire contents of the original drive over to the replacement drive.
7. Use FDISK to set the primary partition on the replacement drive as active.
8. Carefully remove the original drive from the machine and set it aside.
9. Move the replacement drive into the space occupied by the original drive. Connect the replacement drive to the original drive's cable. Remember to set the master/slave jumpers if needed.
10. Power up the PC and verify that the replacement drive is working.
10. Demonstrate to the instructor correct operation.
11. Remove any equipment and software that you installed. Return the PC to its original state. Return the replacement hard drive to your instructor.
