Audio Hardware - Lab 1

Configuration and Testing

DIRECTIONS: Instructor signoff: ______________________

Follow the steps below.

1.  Ask your instructor for a computer and a sound card.

2.  Record the sound card manufacturer and model.

3.  Install the sound card in the computer.

4.  Plug a microphone and a pair of speakers into the sound card.

5.  Install the appropriate sound card drivers.  The drivers may be included with the Windows operating system, or you may have to download them from the internet.

6.  Make a recording using a sound recorder or media recorder program.  Record the following text: "Starting Microsoft Windows."

7.  Save the file and play the recording back through the speakers.

8.  Save your .wav file to the hard drive.  Configure Windows 9X/2000 to play your recording when Windows starts.  Your recording should be heard instead of the standard Windows melody when the PC boots up.  Search the Windows help files on "Sounds" if you need help.

9.  Remove the sound card you installed and return the computer to the original condition you found it in.
